End Of Life Care
What is End of Life Care?
While end of life care may seem like it has a simple definition, it really is not quite that simple. This is the type of care that is provided in the final months of a person's life. It could potentially even be the last years of someone's life, but it is usually a shorter amount of time. The entire goal is to provide the ability for someone to die with dignity. The patient's last wishes should be considered when making end of life plans. A person should be allowed to pass away as they wish. An end of life nurse considers this when creating a care plan. This type of care can be provided anywhere that the patient wishes. It is important that the patient's wants are considered, just as much as their needs.
Typically, an end of life nurse is the main person to help guide a patient through their end of life journey. Palliative care is part of the care that someone receives during the end of life. These individuals have been diagnosed with a disease or illness that has no cure. These patients need care that helps minimize symptoms, reduce pain, and keep them comfortable. Palliative care is a holistic approach to the end of life because it addresses the needs of the person, and not just the symptoms of the illness. While this type of care is common towards the end of life, it does not have to begin when someone is facing their final days or months. It can begin sooner and while the patient is actively receiving treatment to help cure their disease or illness.
This type of care can be provided by any health professional in any location or facility. Nursing assistants play a central role in providing care to patients coping with serious illnesses and are essential members in palliative care. As a matter of fact, when it comes to palliative care, nursing assistants provide up to 90% of hands-on patient care.
Many different patients in various stages of their lives can benefit from this type of care. This is intended to be care, but not necessarily treatment. A typical end of life patient is someone that is considered to die in the next year. This is not as easy to determine for each person because everyone is different. If someone has a disease that cannot be cured, palliative care is a great option. If someone is in a weakened condition and what other conditions that will most likely cause them to die in the next year, they may benefit from palliative care. Some people who benefit from this care are those that have suffered from an unexpected and sudden event such as a devastating accident. When someone is nearing the end of life, it can be scary and difficult for the patient and their family. This is when the patient needs support and guidance to find peace with the end of their lives.
